The Monster Book is the creature textbook of a wizarding school, and our edition, written under the name of Edwardus Lima, reads like a field guide kept by a careful naturalist. It moves from the creatures students meet in their first lessons outdoors — the proud hippogriff, the centaur and the three-headed guard dog — to the ones that are only ever discussed from a safe distance, such as the basilisk and the larger dragons. A separate part is given to water creatures and dark creatures, and the last pages turn to rare and extinct species that survive only in old records. Every entry is illustrated in black and white, and handwritten-style notes run beside the drawings, as if a student had added their own warnings.
